Creating DataGrid Programmatically
Submitted by Bipin Joshi - 3/1/2002
http://www.dotnetjunkies.com/news/default.aspx?newsid=275

Generally ASP.NET DataGrid is placed on the web form at design time.
You add the asp:DataGrid control to the web form and then add bound
columns to it. However, some times it becomes necessary to create
DataGrid via code and then add it to the web form. This articles will
show you how to do just that.

XML MESSAGING SECURITY UNDER THE GUN | Tip: Ed Tittel

SOAP is the Simple Object Access Protocol, an XML-based technology
designed to pass messages between applications across a network. RPC
stands for Remote Procedure Call, and represents a set of
programmatic interfaces to let local applications request and reply
to network access and services "as if they were local." REST stands
for Representational State Transfer, a Web oriented set of
transaction services that defines its own mechanisms to model and
handle networked transactions of all kinds.

FIRST C# MAIL VIRUS DETECTED | News: InternetNews
A 17 year-old Dutch girl, with way too much time on her hands, claims
to have written the first virus in C#. The W32/Sharpei@MM virus snaps
at the .NET framework through a three-pronged worm. The prongs are a
dropper program, a mailer, and a .NET component. The worm disguises
itself as an e-mail promising to make Windows 50% faster and more
secure. Experts say it's low risk and not in the wild.

UNDERSTAND SOAP EXTENSIONS
by Bob Tabor

In the previous tip, we discussed DiffGrams and I showed what a
DiffGram looked like in its native habitat. Since these creatures
only come out under the cover of a SOAP message (and are therefore
too fast for humans to see with the naked eye) we need a tool to
capture a snapshot picture of what a SOAP message looks like during
transfer between client and server. To do this, we're going to take a
brief detour and talk about how ASP.NET works so we can then explain
how SOAP Extensions will allow us to plug into and capture the SOAP
stream before (or after) it gets transformed into an object that is
processed by your Web Service code, and also capture the objects
before (or after) they are transformed back into an outgoing SOAP
message.

XML MESSAGING SECURITY UNDER THE GUN | by Ed Tittel

SOAP is the Simple Object Access Protocol, an XML-based technology

handle networked transactions of all kinds.

As Dodd's article points out, there's a raging debate in the XML
developer community right now that while SOAP-RPC is a powerful and
all-too-usable technology to bolt applications and services together
across a network, it's fraught with potential security issues that
could be problematic in many, many scary ways.

SAY HELLO TO XHTML 1.1! | by Ed Tittel

On May 31, 2001, the W3C released a new specification for XHTML
called "XHTML 1.1 - Module Based XHTML." As the name of this new
specification suggests, this new formulation for XHTML is strongly
based on the XHTML Modularization finalized in April 2001. In simple
terms, here's how to understand XHTML 1.1.

XML DOM OBJECT TO MAKE A DATABASE CALL | Expert Advice: Sean McGrath

A member asks, "On my Web page (IE5.0), I am using XML DOM object to
make a database call. The result set is received in XML format by the
client function (javascript) which parses it. If my XML text content
contains the character '(r)' then on some user machine the parser
errors with a message 'invalid character in the text content'. On
most other systems, it handles it just fine. What is the problem and
how can I fix it?"

SUN FILES PRIVATE ANTITRUST SUIT AGAINST MICROSOFT | News: the451
Sun has sued Microsoft, alleging Microsoft's illegal behavior has
harmed Sun's Java platform. The legal action, though not the first
between the two, drives a deeper wedge between the two biggest
players in the Web services market. Other vendors like IBM and
Hewlett-Packard are eager to bridge the gap, but any future Web
services partnership between Microsoft and Sun now seems unlikely.

THE MISSING LINK | Online porn site said to have duped Army

When the U.S. Army says "be all you can be," they probably didn't
have this in mind. A computer specialist convinced the military to
pay for a T1 Internet line that he said they needed to communicate
with troops stationed in Bosnia. But this was allegedly a bunch of
Balkan baloney. Investigators say he really used the line to run a
for-profit sex show on the Web. Major mistake! The indictment says
the T1 cost the Army more than $100,000 between 1997 and 1998.

THE MISSING LINK | Audit reveals true nature of "work" e-mail

Personal e-mail at work? Egads! Inquiring minds at a security
software company wanted to know just how much of that work e-mail is
related to work. According to research from Peapod, which stuck its
nose into British businesses, 54% of e-mails going through corporate
gateways are personal, 7% are pornographic and slightly more than 1%
are the kinds of e-mails that could get a company in trouble with the
law. So the next time you're on the clock and forward elf bowling to
a mate in Manchester, remember, you're in the majority!

VALUE OF USING XML AND WEB SERVICES STANDARDS | Discussion Day

Who: Roy Hoobler, Director of Internet Technologies, Net@Work
Date: March 14, 2002
Time: 10:00a to 2:00p, Eastern Time

Please join us in our Best Practices Discussion Forum where frequent
searchWebServices contributor and XML professional Roy Hoobler will
discuss the business values of using standards such as XML and Web
services.

"Many are touting Web services to be the saving grace of software
development -- saving businesses money, mainly on projects that
integrate different products together. On March 14th, we'd like to
discuss how this is going to be accomplished, i.e. are businesses
going to use the tools major vendors are pushing (WebSphere, IPlanet,
Visual Studio.Net)? Or are developers going to use open source, or
build their own tools, relying on a neutral platform for deployment?
Finally, are Web services going to bring developers to a higher level
of programming and testing (quality assurance) to keep a project on
time and within budget? How might Web services help?" -- Roy Hoobler

UPDATE USING WEB SERVICES, DATASETS | Tip: searchWebServices

In this tip, Bob Tabor continues the series on using Web Services and
Datasets, demonstrating how to make changes to the data in the
Dataset (on the client application), then send the modified Dataset
back to the Web Service provider to update the database.

UPDATE USING WEB SERVICES, DATASETS AND DIFFGRAMS
by Bob Tabor

In this tip, I demonstrate how to make changes to the data in the
Dataset (on the client application), then send the modified Dataset
back to the Web service provider to update the database. To
accomplish this, Microsoft has created the concept of a DiffGram. Due
to the disconnected nature of the Dataset, it is possible that many
different sources (other applications, or many different users of the
same application) could have changed the underlying data after it was
sent to our consumer. Also, its possible that our consuming
application can do more than just update the data...perhaps it can
add new rows of data to the Dataset, or delete rows of data from the
Dataset.

WEB SERVICES' DIRTY LITTLE SECRET | News: CNET
Hold your enthusiasm over Web services, this commentary suggests. In
spite of its potential, the giants that are behind the latest,
greatest computing thing were also sharing the bandwagon
client-server applications a while back and that flopped.
Interoperability might be the stated Web services goal, but will the
biggies like Microsoft, Sun and IBM truly make things easier for
customers by simultaneously forfeiting profit for the cause of
interoperability?
